Alumni Ventures Group Announces the Launch of Its New AVG Emerging Markets Fund

MANCHESTER, NH  — March 18, 2021Alumni Ventures, one of the world’s most active venture capital firms, has announced the April 1 launch of its AVG Emerging Markets Fund.

The Emerging Markets Fund will focus on deploying capital to support innovative companies in business ecosystems outside the traditional U.S. hubs of Silicon Valley, New York City, and Boston. Approximately half of the investments will be made in emerging U.S. markets, the other half in companies based or doing most of their business abroad. This new fund, open to any accredited investor, will compile a broad portfolio of ~20-30 investments over the next 12-15 months. Alumni Ventures selects from deals invested in by actively managed Alumni Ventures funds and vets them for their fit with the Emerging Markets Fund thesis. Key to the investing model is providing investors with a portfolio diversified across sector, stage, geography, and lead investor. The fund will close to new investors on June 30, 2021.

“The past 50 years of venture investing have been largely dominated by three key venture hubs in the U.S.,” observes Michael Collins, CEO of Alumni Ventures. “We argue that the future will be different. In the U.S., we see geographic arbitrage through great startups in cities like Seattle, Austin, Salt Lake City, and St. Louis. Across the world, ecosystems like Canada, Israel, India, and parts of Europe and China are particularly active. We aim to give our investors access to a much more diffuse market within the U.S. and globally.”

The fund has already made several investments including in dental insurance disruptor Beam Dental, natural language processor Lang.ai, digital privacy service Tripleblind, AI-enabled bus model Kolors, and healthcare clinician marketplace Matchwell. Alumni Ventures will also reserve approximately 20 percent of the fund for follow-on opportunities.
