The Most Common Questions from Our Investors

Our fund offers you a smart, simple way to make positive social impact investments that do well and do good. To vet for quality, our AVG investment teams seek top-tier co-investors, rely on solid fundamentals, perform due diligence, and consult experts (we encourage you to review the portfolio of sample deals – you’ll be impressed). The Social Impact Fund then programmatically invests in those deals that meet our criteria. You end up with a diversified portfolio of promising deals across various sectors, stages, and geographies. The minimum investor commitment is $50k.

Yes, if you have lots of excess time to hear pitches. However, many of the deals we see are not publicly available, and others are difficult for outsiders to assess. Beyond access and careful vetting, we offer diversity to help minimize risk and maximize impact. We think this is the smartest, simplest way for most individuals to invest in social impact deals.

Yes. Our network of alumni and other VCs enables our co-investment strategy, and we regularly invest with top venture firms. Here are some firms we’ve invested alongside in the last year: Google Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Kleiner Perkins, Accel Partners, 500 Startups, Sequoia Capital, FundersClub, Y Combinator, General Catalyst Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners.

AVG funds typically have a full-time team of two investment professionals—a Managing Partner and a Principal—with strong entrepreneurial and investing experience. These investment teams are supported by an advisory Investment Committee, a large network of alumni, and the investment department at Alumni Ventures Group. The Social Impact Fund is headed by a Senior Partner, who draws on the resources and talents of AVG to create a diverse portfolio of social impact deals vetted and backed by other AVG funds.

When the fund has a liquidity event, we send distribution checks to investors as soon as the funds are available.

Alumni Ventures Group is the management company for all our funds, which provide the deal flow and back office support for the Social Impact Fund. You can see the full fund list on the Alumni Ventures Group website.

The SEC defines an accredited investor as someone who (a) has earned income that exceeded $200,000 (or $300,000 together with a spouse) in each of the prior two years, and reasonably expects the same for the current year, OR (b) has a net worth over $1 million, either alone or together with a spouse (excluding the value of the person’s primary residence). AVG funds source investments through referrals by other AVG funds, sourced by our team professionals, referred by our 100,000+ community of supporters, and through collaborative relationships with other professional investors. Currently, each of our other AVG funds review about 30-35 investment opportunities for every deal that a fund adds to its portfolio.

We programmatically invest in vetted selections from our other AVG funds. They start with a very broad funnel, selecting only a small percentage of what they review. Key considerations for deals for all AVG funds: We look for strong co-investors with expertise in a sector, a top-flight team, market potential, appropriate deal round structure, aligned incentives. The Social Impact Fund invests in a subset of those deals: those with the dimension of a significant potential for strong positive social impact.

Our fees are industry standard: a 2% annual management fee used to cover business costs each year of the 10-year life of the fund and 20% carry, which comes from profits. There are no additional fees or expenses associated with investing through us. If you are investing via a trust or retirement vehicle, your account managers will likely charge you some fees for setting up and maintaining those accounts.

Simply put: Low Friction, Large Rolodex. We offer a streamlined process and rapid funding. We don’t take Board seats or negotiate terms, and can offer the connections and resources of our large community. Many entrepreneurs view our alumni groups, representing top schools, as value-added investors and have sought us out or expanded rounds to make room for us. By regularly publishing fund updates to our ever-growing networks, we’re spreading the word to an exclusive community of sophisticated investors, well-connected professionals, and talented potential employees.

Lead investors appreciate our involvement for several reasons: Our checks are helpful but not competitive and we fund quickly with little fuss if we decide to do a deal. Finally, we can help them by sharing deals and by providing important contacts and relationships to the portfolio companies. Many lead investors are classmates or professional connections and see us as value-added investors.

Yes. We work with a third party who sets up an IRA on an investor’s behalf and manages all administration. Monies can be transferred without penalty or without jeopardizing tax-deferred status and then invested in a fund “for the benefit of” the investor.

Our investment minimum is $50K (the Senior Partner may make exceptions to that rule).

The portfolio of the AVG Social Impact is created for investors by our Investment Teams, with occasional advisory input from our Social Impact Investment Committee—investors do not pick and choose. 

We provide a K-1 by the end of March each year.

You can access information about your portfolio 24/7 via our secure, online investor portal. There you’ll find details about portfolio composition, valuation (present and historical), and your statements and tax docs.

Yes. Institutions and large investors can put a fixed amount in every deal we do through our Total Access Fund. Institutions or family offices can also participate in our Focused Funds, such as the Social Impact Fund, that specialize on a sector, stage, or area of interest.

We make venture investing smart and simple. Our Total Access Fund provides simple, broad exposure to this attractive asset class, and the investment minimum of $250K is very small compared to alternatives. Focused Funds (like our Social Impact Fund) also provide smart further diversification and exposure to high-interest categories within VC.

Our investments are generally from $100K-$1.5M, in addition to the amount committed by the AVG fund or funds referring the deal.

Entrepreneurs appreciate our streamlined, responsive process. In as little as 2-6 weeks, we can move from initial conversation to investor, with little extra work on their part. In addition, we don’t dictate terms or take Board seats. We can also offer our extensive network connections and resources such as Calls to the Network (appeals to our community for assistance to a portfolio company) and Resource Connector (fellow alums and investors offering business services). In some cases, we also bring sibling funds into our deals, raising additional money in a month or less.

The Resource Connector is a self-service database of alumni and fund investors who have listed themselves or their businesses as resources for entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs can access the database, search for needed resources, and then reach out and start a conversation. The database is free and open to use by all alumni, undergrads, and fund investors.
