For many people, our pets are family. We want to give them not only all the love in the world, but also the best care. According to the World Animal Foundation, there are 86.9 million domesticated animals living in 66% of pet-owning households in the U.S. Unfortunately, the overall veterinary experience continues to be poor, opaque, and unsatisfying due to the high cost and limited options for care.

Founded in 2017, Alumni Ventures portfolio company Small Door Veterinary is giving pet parents the best tools to care for their fur babies. The company’s membership model and technology platform offer a far superior service that puts the pet and owner first, with easy online access to advanced services like telehealth, appointment scheduling, and pet records right at your fingertips. Small Door’s approach provides veterinary services that deliver technology, nutrition, wellness, and prevention into general practice care for pets.

A Pup-ular Solution

Small Door is addressing many of the issues plaguing the veterinary industry by delivering an experience with three core pillars:

  1. Experience: Small Door designs an experience that considers every consumer touchpoint before, during, and after the veterinary visit. As a membership-only veterinary practice, Small Door caps the number of members so you can always get an appointment when you need one. The company recently crossed the 500-member milestone and has maintained an unheard of Net Promoter Score of 97/100.
  2. Technology: Small Door provides pet parents with modern technological convenience through 24/7 telemedicine, mobile booking and confirmation, email triage, touchless auto-debit, digital invoices, and medical record access.
  3. Membership: Small Door’s membership program allows the company to communicate what best practice wellness looks like to prevent surprise vet visit charges. In addition to wellness exams, Small Door offers access to vaccinations, dentistry services, urgent care, surgery, spaying and neutering, and more. Approximately 20% of Small Door members prepay for their annual wellness twelve months in advance, giving the company great revenue predictability, as well.

Small Door currently has units in the West Village and Upper East Side of  NYC and is operating a mobile veterinary practice in the Hamptons during the summer season.

Successful Founders and How We Are Involved

Small Door was founded by two accomplished entrepreneurs, Josh Guttman and Florent Peyre. The two have known each other for over a decade, have had successful prior exits, and have the right mix of experience in financial engineering and operating businesses. In addition, the Medical Chief of Staff Jamie Richardson has practiced veterinary medicine on four continents and possesses a large medical skillset and a strong sense for the business side of veterinary medicine.

Small Door also has an impressive lineup of established VC firms (Lerer Hippeau, Primary Venture Partners, and Brand Foundry Ventures) that are very supportive of the model and company.

Blue Ivy Ventures (Alumni Ventures’ fund for the Yale community) invested in Small Door’s $20 million Series A led by Toba Capital.
