AVG International Fund FAQs

The Most Common Questions from Our Investors

Our fund offers you a smart, simple way to invest in innovative international ventures. To vet for quality, our AVG investment teams seek top-tier co investors, rely on solid fundamentals, perform due diligence, and consult experts. The International Fund then programmatically invests in those deals that meet our criteria. You end up with a diversified portfolio of promising deals across various sectors, stages, and geographies. The minimum investor amount is $50K.

Yes, to some extent, but many of the deals we see are not publicly available, and others are difficult to assess or simply get into. We provide our investors with a very diverse international portfolio, investing across sector, stage, and region of the world. Beyond access and careful vetting, we offer diversity to help minimize risk. We think this is the smartest, simplest way for most individuals to invest in international deals.

Our strategy is based upon investing alongside the top VCs in the world.

We invest your funds mostly in the first year or two of the fund, depending on your allocation limits. We recommend about 20 deals per year as a sensible pace for an international fund. Due to the fund’s diversity by stage, distributions will be spread out over the 10-year life of the fund. With later stage deals, returns are more likely to come in earlier, while earlier stage deals often taking significant time to reach liquidity. We immediately distribute proceeds after companies have a liquidity event.

Alumni Ventures Group (AVG) is the management company for all our funds, which provide the deal flow for the International Fund. You can see our full fund list on the Alumni Ventures Group web home page. AVG provides the back-end accounting, IT, investor relations, and communications infrastructure for all funds, allowing the AVG investing teams to primarily focus on putting together exceptional portfolios for our investors.

Any accredited investor can participate in the fund.

Our funds source investments through referrals by other AVG funds, sourced by our team professionals, referred by our 100,000+ community of supporters, and through collaborative relationships with other professional investors. Currently, each AVG fund reviews about 30-35 investment opportunities for every one that the fund adds to its portfolio.

We programmatically invest in vetted selections from our other AVG funds. They start with a very broad funnel, selecting only a small percentage of what they review. Key considerations for deals for all AVG funds: We look for strong co-investors with expertise in a sector, a top-flight team, market potential, appropriate deal round structure, aligned incentives. The AVG International Fund invests in a subset of those deals: those with an international focus.

AVG fees are the industry standard 2% annual management fee and 20% carried interest—meaning we share in 20% of the profits of the investment.

We are small, fast, low friction, and have a great network. Alumni connections are also a big plus. One program worth mentioning is that we offer new investments Three Platinum introductions. Portfolio companies can give us three contacts that they’d like to meet with, and we use our network to facilitate this.

For many of the same reasons entrepreneurs like us: We are small, fast, low friction, and very connected. Also, because we don’t lead deals, we can be a great source of deals for our friends. Entrepreneurs and investors in each deal are the principal sources of deal flow for our funds. We also have great relations with major lead investors because of our network: about 15,000 alumni for each of our funds. At various times, we have tapped that network for leads on senior management, potential customers, commercial partners, consultants, Board members, and employees.

Our investment minimum is $50k (at the discretion of the Senior Partner to make exceptions to that rule). Each fund is limited to the number of investors. Our investment size makes us big enough to participate, but not threatening to other investors.

We offer an efficient, fast, and transparent process (no negotiating or taking Board Seats), and limit our post-investment involvement to helpful assistance. In addition, we offer portfolio services to our companies, including Three Platinum introductions: Portfolio companies can give us three contacts that they’d like to meet with, and we use our network to facilitate this. With thousands of investors, plus hundreds of thousands of alumni connections at top schools who support our alumni funds, we can leverage extremely valuable, diverse relationships. At various times, we have tapped that network for leads on senior management, potential customers, commercial partners, consultants, Board members, and employees. Given the number of our funds and their annual nature, we are also an approachable source for follow-on investments.

Our AVG Funds look for strong co-investors with expertise in a sector, a top-flight team, market potential, appropriate deal round structure, aligned incentives. The International Fund adds an additional consideration: an international focus.

Our investments are generally from $100k-$500K, in addition to the amount committed by the AVG fund or funds referring the deal.

We welcome supporters who are interested in our work. Our greatest source of investor prospects, deal leads, and expert referrals comes from our global network of fund supporters. To stay in touch, we invite you to subscribe to our newsletters, mobile app, and podcast.
