“My portfolio is in good shape: I had stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and even some real estate investments. But I had a big hole when it came to venture investing. Through a classmate, I learned about AVG’s approach, and it just made sense. It feels good to know that I’ve got this part of my portfolio covered too.”
“I had a large nest egg in my retirement account. AVG was the perfect investment vehicle to do something new, alternative, and to further diversify my personal portfolio. I also appreciate the secure online investor portal that provides me with interesting details and news on the companies which I’m invested in.”
Why Invest in the Frontier Fund?
Entrepreneurship and innovation are taking place across the country, and we find a lot of exciting venture-backed companies outside the traditional venture corridors in California, New York and Massachusetts. There is a strong argument to be made that opportunities from other regions are overlooked and underfunded. The AVG Frontier Fund seeks out investment opportunities across the US to take advantage of the geographic arbitrage opportunity of more attractive risk-adjusted valuations in cities and regions that represent the rising frontier of venture.
As with all of our funds, we require companies in which we invest to have high-caliber management teams with alumni from top universities. For the Frontier Fund, leadership of our portfolio companies are largely drawn from elite universities like Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, University of Illinois, Washington University, University of Michigan, and others. To construct the Fund’s portfolio, we draw from the tremendous deal flow generated by AVG’s network of funds—which rigorously source and vet deals across a number of criteria—and select only those that meet our criteria for geography, leadership, and value.
Investors in the Frontier Fund own a portfolio of 20-30 venture-backed deals diversified across sector, stage, and geography—all backed by leading venture firms.

Smart, Simple Venture Investing
Large, Diverse Portfolio
Currently, about 15-20% of AVG deals meet the criteria of our Frontier Fund. This is a large number of deals (20-30 per year), so it offers an excellent pool to create portfolio diversification across sector and stage. Your portfolio will consist of 20-30 deals and be deployed (depending on deal flow) over about a year.
Leveraging the AVG Network for Deal Sourcing
With over 20 sibling funds who complete 150+ unique deals per year, and a community of 150,000+ supporting our funds and referring deals, we have a great flow of potential investments to draw upon.

How does the Frontier Fund assemble a great portfolio for me?
- We use our Alumni Fund and broader networks to access deals that simply are not available to most individuals.
- Our full-time investment team professionals review dozens of deals each month, selecting only the most promising to bring to their Investment Committee.
- We only invest in deals with a strong lead investor with sector expertise, combining their due diligence with our own diligence, investment strategy, and criteria for portfolio construction.
“I am in technology in SF, so I have a pretty good venture portfolio around things I know well. I don’t see much outside of the Bay Area and my sector however. My alumni fund was a great way to get a more diversified portfolio, and I enjoy being part of a group of classmates investing together.”
“We’ve been really lucky and participating in the fund was a great way to pay it forward. Both of us were helped by fellow alums at many key points of our lives. And frankly, we just need more people out there creating solutions to societies key problems. I feel an obligation to do my part.”
